OSX Yosemite 10.10 Public BETA

On 7/24 Apple released to the public a Beta version of their latest OS, OS X Yosemite.  Apple sent our redemption codes to one million Beta Program members. Members can request a code which is then redeemed in the App Store where Yosemite can be downloaded.

Not all the features of Yosemite are going to be available since they are designed to work with iOS devices on version 8. Currently version 8 is available only to developers and will be released to the public with the next generation iPhone.

While the OS is stable, it has the Beta label for a reason and is not meant to be loaded on your primary machine.  Some known issues are:

Known Issues
Safari may hang when playing certain Netflix content.
iPhoto 9.5.1 and Aperture 3.5.1 are required on OS X Yosemite. Update to these versions from the Mac App Store.
When entering edit mode in iPhoto, a black screen may be displayed instead of the selected photo.
Photo Stream and iCloud Photo Sharing may not function properly when both iPhoto and Aperture are installed.
The shared purchase history page on the Mac App Store is disabled for Family Sharing accounts.
iCloud Drive may appear empty in the Finder after first time setup. Restart to resolve this problem.
AirDrop may not show nearby Macs.
Sending files to another Mac using AirDrop may not work
.

HPS currently recommends using OS X 10.9.4 on all staff and student machines. Those who choose to update to the Beta version are doing so at your own risk.

Turnitin to End Support for Internet Explorer 8 in July 2014

Turnitin to End Support for Internet Explorer 8 in July 2014
Starting July 1, 2014, Turnitin will no longer support Internet Explorer (IE8) browsers and we will no longer test or fix features and bugs found in Internet Explorer 8. This does not mean that Turnitin will immediately stop working in IE8, however we will be employing more modern browser capabilities such as HTML 5 that do not work with IE8.

We recommend that Internet Explorer 8 users upgrade or move to a current version of one of these free, supported industry standard browsers:

Google Update

Posted: 19 May 2014 02:02 PM PDT
In the coming weeks we’re introducing a feature to keep your account safe from hijackers, even if they have your username and password. Now when we detect a suspicious login, users will be prompted to verify their identity by entering their phone number. Users who have not set up their phone number will see a place to do so in the coming weeks. Note that users can skip entering their phone number but may be asked to add their phone number again at a later date. Google will use that phone number to verify their identity upon the next suspicious login. Once a user verifies their identity the alert is dismissed.

Between January 15 and January 21, 2014, an issue in Gmail caused some actions, such as deleting, reporting spam, starring, archiving, or moving to a folder, to be incorrectly applied to a different message than the message the user was viewing. OS X Mavericks is now available...for free!

OS X Mavericks is now available for free as a software update and can also be located in the App Store. Many users have already gone through with the update and no major issues have been reported as of now. If you have been waiting to upgrade to Mavericks, feel free to go through with the update!

Please notice, with the update to Mavericks, there is a new version of iMovie. The old version of iMovie will remain since the new version’s interface is very different and may cause conflicts with projects started on the old version. I encourage you to test out the new version and once you feel comfortable, to stick with it.

Other changes you will notice:

- iBooks - You can now view books that you've downloaded on your iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch now on your laptop.

- Maps -    You can lookup directions on your Mac and send them directly to your iPhone.

- Tags -     Simply tags the files you want to organize together with a keyword such as "Science" or "English" then when you want to find those files, simply click on it in the Finder side bar or enter it in the search field.

In total there are 200+ with the new Mavericks OS. Download and enjoy!

Turnitin - Changes to Submission Workflow

Turnitin - Changes to Submission Workflow.

Today we released a number of changes and improvements to Turnitin, the most noticeable of which is a change to the assignment submission workflow for instructors and students. This change is specific to users submitting a single file to Turnitin from Turnitin.com, or select LMS integrations that offer a single-sign-on or a framed-in experience.

As we continue to expand Turnitin’s accepted file types to include files that may have little or no text, we now show an immediate image preview of the file being submitted. Below is the new submission workflow from a student perspective; instructors have a similar experience: First, the student fills out the Submission title field, and selects a file to upload (from local computer, Google Drive™, or Dropbox), then click the Upload button. Step 1: Select File After clicking upload, the student is shown a 'Processing' screen, with some additional information about the submission and assignment. Step 2: Processing A formatted preview of the first page of the submission is displayed. The user is prompted to confirm the submission. If for some reason a paper takes more than 2 minutes generate a preview (which is rare), there is an alternate workflow in which the user can choose a couple options: Cancel, and try again—the user will be taken back to select a file. Keep trying, I'll be back—the user can leave and will be sent an email with status information. The user can also decide to continue waiting. Step 3: Please Confirm The user can zoom in on the image preview if needed to help confirm that they have submitted the correct file. Step 3b: Enlarge Image Preview The user is shown a digital receipt, with some updates. Step 4: Digital Receipt

The association will appear both on the mark and on the criterion in the rubric or grading form.
